As part of the new Outlaw Triathlon in Nottingham, an open water swimming event has been added to the event weekend, taking place on the morning of Saturday 7th August. Competitors can take on swims of 500m, 1500m and 3000m in Holme Pierrepont regatta lake. Entries are now available.

The event will aim to appeal to triathletes and swimmers alike and former Olympians have already agreed to take part as part of the link with official charity partner, the British Heart Foundation. This will give triathletes an unusual opportunity to take on some former greats, who may need to start their training sooner rather than later!

Organiser Iain Hamilton of One Step Beyond said:

“We wanted to give people an opportunity to come along and be part of the Outlaw. They may not fancy doing the long distance triathlon, but they can be involved by taking part in the swim.

“The link with Olympians has come about through our charity link in memory of Simon Willis. His wife Gaynor (nee Stanley), was an Olympian in 1984 and her company, SwimShop are a partner of the event. We’re looking forward to welcoming some great names from the past!”

The 500m event will be ideal for novices whilst experienced swimmers can take on the longer races. We hope that local triathletes, swimmers and residents will enter and contribute to a fantastic weekend.

It may be the first time that many of them have been part of a triathlon event and there will be hundreds of nervous triathletes around the venue racking their bikes and registering, so there will be a real buzz around the place.

Outlaw Triathletes are welcome to join in free of charge if they want to test their wetsuits and get a feel for swimming in Holme Pierrepont. It’s also something for partners and family to take part in during the weekend.

Hamilton added:

“Holme Pierrepont is an ideal venue for open water swimming because it’s long and relatively narrow so it’s easier for swimmers to stay on course. There are also plenty of hot showers and a great cafe on site for afterwards.

“The national open water swimming championships have taken place at Holme Pierrepont several times in the past so it’s a tried and tested venue and we hope people will come along and take part.”

Entries are available now priced between £14.00 – £24.00 including a donation to the British Heart Foundation.

One Step Beyond and Lincoln University have joined together to give you an exclusive offer – free of charge. Are you a competitive triathlete interested in having your current fitness levels (VO2max etc.) and heart rate training zones determined scientifically, whilst also taking part in some cutting edge and triathlon-specific research?

If so, then University of Lincoln are currently undertaking a performance related study and would like to recruit you. Ideally you should have been competing for at least 12 months and finishing in around the top 20% of races you have competed in, whilst being able to travel to the University of Lincoln for regular testing.

The study will involve the completion of maximal, incremental tests on both the bike and treadmill, in addition to a number of lab-based sprint triathlon performances – with breathing and blood measures taken throughout each test.

The results you gain will hopefully allow you to undertake more specific training in relation to your heart-rate, running speed and cycling power. If you are interested and think you may be suitable for this study, please contact Danny Taylor at dtaylor@lincoln.ac.uk for further details.

The bike course for the Outlaw Triathlon has been unveiled by organisers, One Step Beyond, today, Tuesday 26th January 2010.

The course is starting and finishing at Holme Pierrepont National Watersports Centre. It will utilise some of Nottinghamshire’s best road surfaces, quietest routes and enjoy lane closures, managed junctions and extensive marshalling. Special permission has also been granted to return to the regatta lake through the private grounds of Holme Pierrepont Hall.

Organiser Iain Hamilton, said:

“There is no doubt about it, this is a fast course. We’re delighted to have the full support of Nottinghamshire’s highways department to secure lane closures and access to some of the best roads in the county. Being able to return through Holme Pierrepont Hall will make this a really memorable ride, and a fantastic backdrop for photographs!”

Athletes will complete three laps around a rolling course, and an out and back route to get to the start of the laps. The 112mile route will see cyclists exit Holme Pierrepont along Adbolton Lane and Regatta Way before joining the flat and fast A52 dual carriage way, which will have the benefit of a lane closure.

It will then follow quiet country roads to Gunthorpe Bridge and the A6097 to Lowdham roundabout, where the route will take a managed right turn towards Southwell, with traffic having been diverted away from the bike route. This will be the start of the lapped section and those who have competed in the popular Southwell Triathlon will be very familiar with the route to the minster town.

A free spectator bus will be available to transport people to and from Southwell throughout the day. This will be a key spectator and entertainment point, where family and friends will have the opportunity to see athletes up to three times during their ride.

The route continues towards Newark before joining the A617 heading north. It returns to Lowdham through Farnsfield and Oxton, routes used weekly by local time triallists.

Hamilton added:

“The route is available for athletes to download from our website now, ensuring they’ll have plenty of time to ride it as part of their training leading up to the event on 8th August 2010.

“We’ve also booked training camps on 21st March and 16th May with thetriathloncoach.com coaches where athletes can have a look at the route, and there’s the Southwell Sprint Triathlon of course on 30th May, which uses part of the route!

“Places are filling up quickly for the Outlaw and places for the training camps are limited to the first fifty people for each date.”

Adam Moffat of organisers, One Step Beyond said:

“We were asked by the venue to avoid the race course, which is very heavy going after the recent bad weather. They need to get it ready for racing and it was potentially going to be really hard work for runners.

“We’ve been down to the venue and designed a new course that we’re very happy with. It should be a faster course now and will see athletes doing 3 loops starting and finishing directly in front of the main grandstand, as well as taking in some behind the scene areas such as the stable areas.”

Last year the event was won by Adam Bowden in a fast time of 30:47min and Jenson Button ran a very respectable 38:27.

Places are still available through OneStepBeyond.org.uk. Entry includes a weekend pass to the TCR show and a £10 Saucony voucher.

We are pleased to release the confirmed bike course for the new Lakeside Triathlon which will be held on the 27 June 2010. The exciting new event is aimed at local athletes, and with a flat and fast bike course is an ideal course for first time triathletes.

Athletes will take part in a 750m swim in Lakeside’s beautiful Alexandra Lake followed by a flat and fast 20km bike and a 5km run.

The bike course will start and finish alongside the lake and exit the shopping centre along the A125 before joining London Road (A126) heading east. Athletes will take a left turn along Devonshire Road to the roundabout, where they will turn left into Elizabeth Road (A1012). A final left turn along the Arterial Road back to Lakeside Shopping Centre will take athletes back to the start, where they will repeat the same loop again before moving on to the run.

Organiser, Iain Hamilton, of One Step Beyond said:

“The course is designed to be simple and will have police support at all major junctions offering cyclists priority over motorists. We’ve had great support from the Thurrock Council and the local police to get this exciting new event up and running.

“The opportunity to race within the grounds of one of Europe’s largest shopping centres is unique and very exciting. Athletes can expect to have lots of support on the day as the course is overlooked by viewing areas, bars, cafes, restaurants and shops.”

Entries and course maps are now available from the Lakeside Triathlon event page.

“The camps will familiarise athletes with the various aspects of the course, which looks like it could be super fast! We’ll also cover things like planning and fine tuning your training, nutrition and race strategy.

“Iron distance racing invariably requires athletes to overcome challenges throughout their training and preparation and on the day itself. Attending a camp will give athletes every opportunity to prepare themselves for success.”

Athletes will have the opportunity to try swimming in Holme Pierrepont Lake during the second camp, and both camps will incorporate elements of running and cycling as well. Based at Holme Pierrpont, the camps will familiarise athletes with how things will be set up when the Outlaw takes place on 8th August 2010. Places for the camps, and for the race are still available, but filling fast!

Make sure you are properly prepared when the Outlaw kicks off this August!

Two lucky winners will receive a complete set of running kit including shoes, socks, shorts, t-shirt, long sleeve, backpack and cap from the current Saucony range. All the Saucony line-up is made of the latest technical fabrics designed to keep you as comfortable as possible when out running. You can chose between the top-selling ProGrid Ride or Guide shoes, depending on your personal requirements, and if you’re not sure, we’ll get the tech guys from Saucony to advise you, or better still come for Gait analysis on the Saucony Shoe Lab at the show itself.

The TCR Show in Feb is a great place to start your season by targeting the Saucony 10km run and checking out the show to pick up a few bargains, meet other triathletes, cyclists and runners, find out about events and training tips and, of course, droll over some state of the art bikes!

Entry to the Saucony 10km race includes a weekend pass for the show. Join the likes to Jensen Button, who swapped the F1 track for the Sandown race course last year and took part alongside hundreds of other runners.
Just a month since launching, the Outlaw Triathlon is two thirds full and shaping up to be the UK’s premier long distance triathlon. We can now confirm the event start time, swim and run courses for the event taking place in Nottingham on 8th August 2010.

The bike course has also been approved by Nottinghamshire’s highway bosses, and will be released prior to Christmas subject to contracts being confirmed with the preferred traffic management company.

The event will commence with a dramatic mass swim start at 6am. Iain Hamilton commented: “We’ve opted for a mass start, using the full width of Holme Pierrepont Lake. It will provide a fabulous spectacle to start the day just as the sun comes up.”

Athletes will have two hours in which to complete the 2.4mile swim and ready themselves for 112miles of cycling around the stunning Nottinghamshire countryside. The cut off for the bike will be after 10½ hours, meaning that all athletes will need to be off the bike course by 4.30pm.

Transition time will be allowed on top of the cut off times, as long as the final time limit of 17 hours is achieved. This will ensure that all Outlaw Triathletes are available for the 11pm celebrations and party.

The run course (download run course PDF) will be a three-lap route out and back from Holme Pierrepont to a turn around point on the south bank of the River Trent. Athletes will pass the Nottingham Forest Football Ground, go under Trent Bridge and turn around at County Hall, the home of Nottinghamshire County Council. The whole embankment area will be alive with spectators and visitors to Nottingham’s Riverside Festival.

Outlaws-in-training will also be able order limited edition clothing, including high quality designer t-shirts, technical kit, hoodies and beanie hats very soon.

Iain added: “The Outlaw is really taking shape now and there’s genuine excitement amongst our partners, particularly following the rush of entries received in the first week of launching. We are aware of the level of interest in this event and will have more announcements to follow this one in the coming weeks.

“We anticipate the event selling out by early January, if not sooner, and so would urge those interested in entering to do so now to avoid being disappointed.”
