Mansfield
Short Course Triathlon
Welcome
to the 2nd Mansfield Short Course Triathlon in the 21st
Century. There are a number of changes from last years event, these
changes are only in place to help cope with the additional 100 competitors
that we will have racing. The only major change that will affect everyone
is that the main car park has changed. This will now be on the
Carrs, which is just off the A60. We are lucky enough again to have
some of the roads closed on the course, which we hope help makes a safer
& more enjoyable event. We hope that everyone has an enjoyable and
safe day.

Directions
to Medan Vale Leisure Centre, Warsop, Mansfield.
Warsop
is approximately 15 miles north of Nottingham city centre, and 3 miles
north of Mansfield town centre. It is best to use the A60 when approaching
Warsop. Travelling from the south, after you have passed the signs for the
Town Centre take the next right into Hetts Lane. Then turn first
left into Burns Lane where you will find Medan Vale Leisure Centre
on the left. Approaching from the north, at the bottom of Cuckney Hill (1
mile downhill) you will pass the back of Medan Vale Leisure Centre on your
left. After this Hetts Lane will be the first left. Then follow the
details as above.
Road
Closures
As
mentioned before, we are lucky enough to have some roads closed for the
benefit of the event. Burns Lane will be closed from 8am until 2pm.
Burns Lane is the road that Medan Vale Leisure Centre is situated
on, but competitors will be allowed to use Burns Lane to access to
the car park only.

Car
Parking
Please
follow the signs for Parking as you approach along the A60. We will be
using different car parks for the race this year. It will be important to
remember that cars parked at the Leisure Centre on Burns Lane may have
difficulty leaving after the event as the road will be closed until 1pm.
Car Park 1 will be the Carrs on Church Road (A60) and Car Park 2
will be at the Medan Vale Leisure Centre. Car Park 1 is approximately 800
metres from the Leisure Centre, so please allow 5 minutes to walk. Please
follow the instructions of the Army Cadets to help you park.
Please see the attached map.

Race
Registration 7.00am 9.30am
Race
registration will take place in the Multi Purpose Room. To find
registration please follow the signs from the Main Reception .All
competitors will need to register on the morning of the race. Please
register approx. 1 hour before your start, but no later than 9.30am.
Before entering the Race Registration room, ensure you know your
competitor number. At Registration, firstly please go to the BTA Check
Desk, to either show your Race Licence or collect your Day Licence if you
have pre-paid for your Day Licence. If you do not have a Race Licence and
have not pre-paid then you will be required to pay 3 for your Day
Licence. If you refuse to pay, you will not be allowed to register, and
thus NOT be allowed to race. Then please find your appropriate table; show
your Race / Day Licence and collect your competitors goody bag. Inside
this bag you will find: Event T Shirt, 2 x race numbers, 1 x swim hat, 1 x
bike frame sticker plus other goodies. You will be required to register
before you can get into the transition area.
There
will be no registration after 9.30am. Any competitors that have not
registered by 9.30am will lose their place in the event.

Race
Briefing
Weather allowing this will happen inside the transition area. If you are unsure about anything please attend. Race Briefing will inform you of any last minute route changes and safety points. If you have any questions or queries on race day, please ask them after Race Briefing. There will only be one Race Briefing, which will be held at 7.45am prompt.
Transition
Area
The
Transition Area is a fully secure area for competitors only, this is where
you will keep your bike during the swim and run sections. To get into the
transition area you must show your race number at ALL times. You will also
be asked to show both your race number & bike number when taking your
bike out after you have finished. This is for your security. Please
understand this will cause queues during peak times, but it is for your
benefit. The Transition Area will not close during the event, so please
understand that if you are not racing that you will be asked to make a
clear way for racing competitors. The security for Transition Area will
finish 15 minutes after the last competitor finishes. After this the
Transition Area will be broken down and taken away. Please remove your
bike from the Transition Area as quickly as possible after you have
finished.

The
Swim 400 Metres
The
swim will take place in the 20 metre indoor heated pool at Medan Vale
Leisure Centre. Swim 20 lengths 400 meters. Please arrive on poolside
approx. 10 minutes before your start time. A timekeeper will start you at
30-second intervals in individual lanes. Your start time has been worked
out from your estimated time that you fill in on your entry form. By doing
this it is hoped that you will be with competitors of a similar standard
during the swim section. There will be other competitors in the same lane
during the race. It is the reasonability of the faster swimmer to
overtake, but also remember that it is much easier to swim behind someone.
There will be marshals at the end of the lanes to help you count your
lengths. You will be supplied with a swim hat in your goody bag, please
wear this to help the marshals count your lengths. If you wish to get
changed for the bike and run section after the swim, you may either use
the swimming pool changing rooms or change inside the transition area -
nudity is not allowed. The only rule is that you cannot walk along the
bottom of the pool.
Please
Note: Only competitors are allowed on poolside.

The
Bike 10 Miles
From
leaving the transition area, turn left onto Burns Lane. Go along Burns
Lane for approx. 600 metres, and then turn left onto Manor Road. Caution
here, this is a sharp bend!! Follow this to the junction with Coggins
Lane. Turn right here. Be very careful. The Police will marshal this
junction. The very first section of the bike course will be closed from
traffic. Once you have turned right onto Netherfield Lane this will be
open to traffic.
Go
through Medan Vale; stay on this road for approx. 3 miles until you reach
a T-junction. Turn left here onto the A616 (Budby). Please be very careful
at the junction as it leads onto a fast road. There will be Race Officials
here to help you. Follow the A616 for 4 miles until you reach Cuckney.
Turn left, then immediately left again onto the A60 towards
Mansfield. Again, please be careful, as the A60 is a busy road. Stay
on the A60 for approx. 4 miles. You will gradually climb for 2 miles,
before then going downhill for 1 mile - please be careful as you return
back into Warsop. Turn left into Hetts Lane, then immediately left back
into Burns Lane and into the transition area.
The
Run 3 Miles
Having
enjoyed the bike ride, here comes the fun. For some this will be the first
time that you will have experienced the unique feeling of running straight
after cycling. The Run Course is a very simple 1 1/2 miles out, turn round
and 1 1/2 miles back. The terrain is mixed, the course includes tarmac,
gravel, sand and grass. From the transition area, you will take the same
route as the start of the bike. Turning left along Burns Lane you will
continue along here past the point were the bike course turns left on
Manor Road. There will be a drink station approx. 800 metres into the run
course. At the end of Burns Lane, you will turn right and go gradually
uphill for 200 metres. Follow this path for a further 3/4 miles until you
reach the turn round point, and then re-trace your route back to the
transition area and finish.

What
Will You Need?
As
this event attracts all types of athletes, from complete novices to
international standard athletes, you will see bikes worth from 25 to 2500.
For many people this will also be their first triathlon and you do not
need all of the kit. There are certain items which you will need: a
swimming costume or swimming trunks, swimming goggles are also high
recommended but not compulsory. A road worthy bike: this includes mountain
bikes, shopping bikes, road bikes or even Raleigh Choppers. An ANSI/BS
approved cycling helmet: these are available from Total Fitness or other
good cycling shops, prices start from around 30. A pair of shoes for the
cycling & run section. All other extras such as elastic laces,
specific triathlon clothing and handlebars are not a necessity but will
help you on the day. For further advice please contact Total Fitness on
0115 9222226 or www.totalfitness-uk.com

Race
Marshals
No
event like this can run smoothly without the help of many marshals. If you
have friends or family that will be supporting you at the event, ask them
if they would be willing to give up a couple of hours to help marshal. All
marshals will receive an event shirt, food, drink plus the chance to win a 50 voucher given by our sponsors Total Fitness. The winner
of the 50 voucher from our last event at Southwell was Russell Large. If
you would like further information about becoming a race marshal please
contact Teresa on 0115 9190096. You do not require any previous experience
or knowledge on triathlon to become a race marshal; any training required
will be given on race day.

Race
Rules
The
British Triathlon Association sanctions this event and the event will be
held within the rules of the British Triathlon Association. Under these
rules it is mandatory that all competitors must wear an ANSI approved
helmet, that all cycles must be in a road worthy condition and that all
competitors are insured by third party civil liability insurance - BTA
Members are insured as part of their membership package, and all other
competitors will be required to purchase a Day Licence from the British
Triathlon Association.
IMPORTANT
INFORMATION: Due
to a rise in the BTAs Insurance Premium Cover, the BTA have been forced
to suspend their personal accident cover for all BTA members. All members
will still have public liability cover during the event but not personal
accident cover. For any further information or clarification, please
contact the BTA direct on www.britishtriathlon.org or 01509 228321.
PLEASE
NOTE: That it is the reasonability of the individual competitors to
navigate the course correctly, not the responsibility of the race
marshals.

Race
Numbers
Race
Numbers must be worn on both the front & back during the bike &
run at all times. Numbers must not be cut or folded. Numbers must be
pinned at all four corners. Number bands are allowed. If
using a race belt, athletes must attach race numbers, one to the front and
one to the rear. While competing, athletes must ensure that the race
numbers remain positioned to the front and rear, and must not allow the
numbers to slide to the sides of the body.
Furthermore,
when attaching both race numbers, it is essential that they be properly
affixed to the belt. Numbers should be pinned approximately one inch from
the top of the number - not in the middle, as the number will simply fold
over! It may be wise to reinforce the back of the number with clear
adhesive tape, especially at the points where the number is pinned.
If
race numbers are not visible, athletes will be penalised by the race
referee (two-minute time penalty) if they cannot correct the problem and
the athlete will also run the risk of receiving no timing splits or being
recorded as they cross the finish line.

Trade
Stands
There
will be a number of trade stands attending the event. Our sponsors Total
Fitness Nottingham will be attending for those last minute purchases you
need to make. And it is hoped that Science In Sport, our nutrition
sponsors will also be able to make the event to give help & advice on
your nutritional needs.

Food & Drink
 Lindas Caf
No
need to bring along any food or drink with you, Lindas Caf will again
be inside the registration room selling hot & cold drinks, cobs,
cakes, crisps, etc, all at very reasonable prices.

Results
The
results will available on www.onestepbeyond.org.uk
on the Monday following. On the day there will only be final times
available, splits will be available within a few days. Results will be
sent out within two weeks to those competitors that sent in 2 stamped
address envelopes. Please do not ask for your times before presentation,
this will only cause for the presentation to be delayed.

Prizes
After
receiving feed back from previous events, we are changing how we
categorize our prizes. There will be prizes inline with the BTA Age Group
Bands, i.e. split into 5-year bands. Prizes will only be awarded to the
winners of each age group, if there are at least 3 competitors in that age
group. Presentation will take place within one hour of the last competitor
finishing, weather allowing, either next to the transition area or inside
the registration room. If you believe that you have won a prize, you must
be in attendance to claim your prize.

Thank You
This
event could not happen without the help of many many people. To mention
all by name would be too many, but there are certain people that deserve a
special thanks. My better half, Teresa, who has not only given us another
beautiful baby girl but also, manages to answer the phone whilst changing
nappies and making feeds. Steve Melhuish, who had the idea about putting
on the Mansfield Triathlon again, and Clyde Derbyshire, Beat Manager for
the local area who will be in attendance on the day ensuring that we all
have a safe & enjoyable day. Finally, the Dream Team, our team of
volunteers who turn up at every race, sunshine or snow. A big thanks to
you all.

We
hope that you have a safe & enjoyable day.
Best
regards,
Iain
Hamilton.
