Few Days Left To Join Kurt And 500 Others…
May 22, 2010
Kurt Denman, 37, will become Ashfield Fire Station’s second triathlete when he completes the Southwell Sprint Triathlon on Sunday 30th May. The race (a 400m pool swim, 19.3km bike and 5km run) will be held against the backdrop of Southwell Minster, part of the local area which Kurt and his colleagues protect.
Kurt, a former joiner, joined the Fire Service in 2006. He’s always been keen on sport and used to play rugby for Mansfield Union RFC at Eakring Road - but it was only when he joined the other fire fighters at the Ashfield Fire Station that he was inspired to take up triathlon.
He said:
“One of my colleagues, another fire fighter, did Ironman Lanzarote last year,” says Kurt. “He’s nearly 50, so I thought I could at least do a sprint-distance triathlon! He mentioned the British Triathlon East Midland Series and I thought I’d do one to see how I find it.”
Kurt’s goal is to do a long-distance triathlon like his colleague, and hopes to take part in Nottingham’s Outlaw Triathlon in a year or two.
“I am enjoyed the training,” says Kurt. “We’re only 20 minutes from Derbyshire with its fantastic scenery, which makes for some great (but hilly!) bike training. I train every Sunday with Ashfield RC cycling club. I struggle with the swimming but hope to get through that bit with an average time and then pick it up on the bike and run sections.”
Kurt often runs to work and makes use of the gym at the Fire Station.
“As fire fighters, we are actively encouraged to maintain a good level of fitness, which really helps,” he says.
Kurt is one of many local triathletes enjoying a surge in quality local races.
“Triathlon is a great sport,” he says. “It really gives me a buzz. I’ve had loads of encouragement from the Fire Service and from the guys at Ashfield RC. I can’t wait to do the race now!”
