Iain Hamilton wins Lifetime Achievement Award
March 3, 2015
At the 220 Triathlon Magazine Awards in Sandown Park, Iain was surprised and delighted to win the ‘Jane Tomlinson Award for outstanding contribution to triathlon’.
Jane Tomlinson, of course, provided inspiration to many many people as she battled through breast cancer to raise millions for charity through endurance sport and triathlon. To win an award in her name was a real honour.
Giving out the award, the team at 220 Triathlon highlighted some of Iain’s key contributions and achievements since first establishing One Step Beyond as part of a college project when he was 19 years old.
“Iain makes high quality triathlon experiences available to broad audiences, and his ambitious plans will put triathlon in front of many more for years to come.
He first raced aged 12, competed internationally alongside Spencer Smith and Simon Lessing and set up One Step Beyond as a college project.
The Club Relays were established when Iain was 19. They now attract 2500 and he has grown OSB’s portfolio to involve more than 18,500 participants across multiple events annually.
Iain launched the Outlaw triathlon in 2010. A risk at the time, it’s now multi award-winning, and sells out in days. It commands some of the highest viewer audiences on Channel4.
OSB’s three-year partnership with Cancer Research UK has raised almost £700,000, and should top £1million by the end of 2015.
Working alongside the BTF, OSB has put on events for 25,000 school children and Iain voluntarily set up the junior section of Lincoln Tri. It now has more than 200 members, a regional championship title and a long waiting list.
Iain has helped shape triathlon in the UK, and has exciting plans to continue doing so.”
On behalf of Iain, thank you to everyone who nominated him. And special thanks those who have been an integral part of the development of OSB over the years. This was an unexpected, but much appreciated award!
