Twigg Claims the Outlaw Double, Latham Debuts with a Win
July 27, 2015
Craig Twigg became the first ever double winner of the Outlaw Triathlon and Jenny Latham completed her first long distance triathlon to win the women’s event.
Twigg, who lives locally in Leicester, battled the rain and wind to win again against a quality field that included four of the previous five winners. His time of 8:50:56 was fifteen minutes faster than his winning time from last year.
He finished ahead of Nottingham doctor, Tom McGlashan, who started the day hoping to finish in the top ten and surpassed his own expectations. Third place went to Mark Livesey.
Yorkshire-woman Jenny Latham finished ahead of Leicester’s Claire Shea-Simonds. Her winning time of 9:55:59 marked a fine debut where she led from start to finish in the women’s race. Maree Jesson was third.
The local Karen Green Foundation team won the relay event, including a course record bike split from Ryan Perry surpassing the record set by Tom Lowe in 2011. Olympian, Will Clarke, kicked off their day with a 49:20min swim and Shaun Livesey ran the marathon.
This year’s event was the biggest ever, with around 1250 athletes starting. It was the first year that the event has seen bad weather, but the atmosphere was still fantastic as athletes challenged themselves to complete the course for personal best times, personal challenges, charity fundraising and the pride of being crowned a modern-day Outlaw.
Entries for next year’s race will open in September, pre registration is open now via www.onestepbeyond.org.uk.
Athlete quotes:
Craig Twigg, winner: “I was aware that Harry was going to drop out, but when he went off like a bullet I was unsure as to whether he actually would. I think I ran around around 15minutes quicker [than last year]. I’m over the moon.”
Tom McGlashan, 2nd place: “I had aspirations for top ten, but second has just blown me away. My running has always been an absolute disaster but it’s really come on with a little bit of help from my uncle, who is a run coach.”
Jenny Latham, winner: “It’s amazing, and I broke ten hours which is amazing, I was aiming for eleven. I struggled to eat breakfast I was so scared but it was an amazing race.”
Claire Shea-Simonds, 2nd place: “That’s ten minutes off my PB in pretty crappy conditions. Hats off to Jenny, what a debut. I am really pleased with my swim, I ought to give credit Craig Twigg for that, he gave me some pointers that made a real difference. What made it special today was that I had so many friends and family on the course.
